Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about tipping and using this calculator.

What is the standard tip percentage at a restaurant?
The standard tip at a sit-down restaurant in the United States is 15–20%. A 15% tip is considered acceptable for average service, 18–20% for good service, and 20%+ for exceptional service. For fine dining or large groups, 18–20% is the norm.
Should I calculate the tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax (subtotal) amount, since you are tipping for the service rather than the tax. However, tipping on the full post-tax total is also common and slightly more generous. Either approach is widely accepted.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly without a calculator?
The easiest method: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20%. For example, on a $48 bill — 10% is $4.80, so 20% is $9.60. Our free tip calculator above does this instantly for any percentage.
How do you split a bill evenly with tip included?
Use the Bill Splitter tab in our calculator above. Simply enter your bill total, choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator instantly shows the tip per person and the total each person owes — no maths required.
How much should I tip for food delivery?
For delivery services (DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.) a tip of 15–20% is standard. For smaller orders, consider leaving at least $3–5 minimum. Factors like distance, weather, and order complexity can warrant a higher tip.
Do I tip at a buffet restaurant?
Yes, a small tip is appropriate at a buffet. Since the server still brings drinks and clears plates, tipping $1–2 per person or about 10% is customary and appreciated.
Is tipping expected in countries outside the US?
Tipping customs vary significantly by country. In Japan and South Korea, tipping can be considered rude. In the UK and Australia, tips are appreciated but not always expected. In Canada and Mexico, US-style tipping is common. Check our Tipping Guides section for country-specific advice.
Does this tip calculator work with different currencies?
Yes. Our tip calculator automatically detects your location and selects the appropriate currency. You can also manually choose from over 30 currencies using the Currency dropdown — the results update instantly.
