How to Calculate a Tip: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Learn exactly how to calculate a tip for any bill. From the quick 10% trick to splitting bills with friends, this guide covers every tipping scenario with simple formulas and examples.

Calculating a tip doesn’t have to involve mental gymnastics. Whether you’re settling a restaurant bill, ordering delivery, or paying for a haircut, you can master tip math in a few minutes — or just use our free tip calculator above.

The Tip Calculation Formula

The math behind any tip is straightforward:

Tip Amount = Bill Total × (Tip % ÷ 100)

Total = Bill Total + Tip Amount

Example

Bill: $65.00 | Tip: 20%

  • Tip = $65.00 × 0.20 = $13.00
  • Total = $65.00 + $13.00 = $78.00

Quick Mental Math Tricks

You don’t always have your phone handy. These shortcuts work on any bill:

The 10% Method (fastest)

Move the decimal point one place left to find 10%.

  • $48.00 → $4.80 is 10%
  • For 20%: double it → $9.60
  • For 15%: add half → $4.80 + $2.40 = $7.20
  • For 18%: 10% + (10% × 0.8) → $4.80 + $3.84 = $8.64

The Double-and-Divide Method

For any odd percentage, find 10%, double for 20%, then subtract or add increments.

Should I Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?

This is one of the most debated tipping questions. The short answer:

  • Pre-tax is technically correct — you’re tipping for service, not for the government’s share.
  • Post-tax (the final line on the receipt) is also widely accepted and slightly more generous.

Either approach is perfectly fine. The difference on a typical restaurant bill is small — about $0.20–$0.50 on a $50 meal at a 15% tax rate.

How to Split a Bill with Tip Evenly

When dining with a group, follow these steps:

  1. Calculate the tip on the full bill (not each person’s share)
  2. Add the tip to get the total
  3. Divide by the number of people

Example

$120 bill | 18% tip | 4 people

  • Tip: $120 × 0.18 = $21.60
  • Total: $120 + $21.60 = $141.60
  • Per person: $141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40

Our Bill Splitter does this automatically — just enter the bill, tip %, and number of people.

How to Calculate a Tip on Alcohol

Some diners wonder whether to tip on the alcohol portion of a restaurant bill. There are two schools of thought:

  • Tip on the full bill (including drinks): the server still took your order, refilled glasses, and managed the table.
  • Tip 15% on food, 20%+ on alcohol: acknowledges the higher cost of drinks.

Either approach is acceptable. At a bar ordering only drinks, tip per drink ($1–2 per beer/wine, $2 per cocktail) or 15–20% on the tab.
